Ukraine and Russia were victorious at the European Team Chess Championships in Terme Čatež.

Ukraine took the open title, following a climactic conclusion to the event in Slovenia.

France, Armenia and Azerbaijan were also all in contention to take the title entering the ninth and final round, but it was Ukraine were emerged as champions.

Ukraine defeated Armenia to finish the tournament unbeaten and with 14 points.

France defeated Azerbaijan and also moved onto 14 points, but trailed Ukraine on the Olympiad-Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak score.

Ukraine therefore won the European title for the first time, with Poland completing the top three.

It was considerably less close in the women's event, with the winner and runner-up already decided before the final round.

Russia won all nine games to end top of the pile on 18 points, with Georgia second on 15.

Azerbaijan, with five wins, two draws and two defeats, edged Ukraine on the tiebreak to finish third.

Russia have now won four women's titles in a row.
