Sapporo is expected to revise its planned bid for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to reduce the potential cost of hosting the multi-sport event.

The Japanese city has been the most vocal of the potential hosts for the 2030 Winter Olympics, with a bid having been mooted for several years.

Sapporo had initially featured in an unofficial dialogue phase for the 2026 Games, but withdrew from consideration in 2018.

The decision was claimed to have been made following a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Hokkaido region, of which Sapporo is the capital, which damaged buildings and infrastructure.

A 2026 Games would also have meant three consecutive Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Asia, following Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022.

Sapporo instead focused attentions on 2030, with the city’s Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto travelling to Lausanne last January to outline its proposal to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach.

Bach claimed Sapporo could organise an "excellent Winter Olympic Games".

According to the Japanese news agency Kyodo, Sapporo is seeking to revise its existing plans to reduce potential costs by up to ¥90 billion (£590 million/$709 million/€690 million).

The city had previously estimated the cost of the Games could be between ¥310 billion (£2 billion/$2.7 billion/€2.3 billion) to ¥370 billion (£2.4 billion/$3.2 billion/€2.8 billion).

It is claimed the city now hopes the Games would cost between ¥280 billion (£1.8 billion/$2.4 billion/€2.1 billion) and ¥300 billion (£1.6 billion/$2.6 billion/€2.3 billion).

Kyodo reported that organisers are keen to avoid constructing new venues for the Games, following the IOC’s urge to use existing facilities.

Sapporo had previously raised the possibility of constructing a new sliding centre for the Winter Olympics back in 2018.

A revised plan is expected to see events also held in Obihiro and Nagano, with the latter boasting a sliding centre built for the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Sapporo previously hosted the Winter Olympics in 1972.

The Japanese city highlighted its credentials to stage the event for a second time when it hosted the 2017 Asian Winter Games.

It marked the third time Sapporo hosted the continental event after 1986 and 1990.

Sapporo Mayor Akimoto told Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun earlier this month an updated version of the Games plan could be published before the end of November.

He claimed the revised plan would aim to receive the public’s support by providing clarity over the proposed budget for the event.

Sapporo has expressed hope that hosting race walking and marathon events during the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympics would boost its prospects.

The cost of the Tokyo 2020 postponement has been raised as an issue regarding public support for a new Olympic and Paralympic bid.

Several candidates have outlined their interest in staging the 2030 Games.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is backing a potential Aragon-Catalonia bid after meeting the Spanish Olympic Committee last month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently told IOC President Bach in-person that Ukraine is "determined" to become a Winter Olympic host.

The United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee has yet to decide over whether to push ahead with a Salt Lake City bid for either 2030 or 2034.

Vancouver has also eyed a bid for the Games, 20 years on from the Canadian city last hosting the event.
