Athletes' uniforms at the 2022 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships in Goyang in South Korea will be made from recycled plastic bottles.

The 330 doboks to be worn by participants will be made from fabric manufactured by crushing discarded plastic bottles and spinning them out with yarn, with the claimed to reflect the traditional beauty of South Korea and emblem of Goyang.

Non-competition uniforms will be provided to approximately 700 people, including volunteers and the organisers of the tournament, and these will also be made from recycled plastic bottles, news agency Yonhap reports.

It takes 15 500-millilitre bottles to make one uniform.

Goyang City said that it planned to use the recycled fabric in consideration of three keywords of the competition - peace, environment and economy.

It is the first time that this has been done in South Korea.

An estimated 2,000 athletes from more than 70 countries are expected to participate at the competition, which is set to take place from April 21 to 24 next year at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang.

There are 275 medals to be contested over 36 disciplines.

The World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships are held biennially, and in May 2020, the city in the Gyeonggi province was selected as the venue for the 2022 tournament.

The 2020 edition was scheduled to take place in Herning in Denmark.

However, it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and replaced with the inaugural Online World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.
