Racing for the Baloise Trek Lions, Aerts of Belgium crossed the line in 58 minutes 58 seconds to earn 40 points on home soil from the 10-lap race.

The 28-year-old's teammate Lars van der Haar of The Netherlands secured the silver medal, clocking in 10 seconds later while Belgian Eli Iserbyt rounded out the top three in 59:12.

It is Iserbyt's worst finish so far this year after winning two races and coming second in another.

Aerts has won the Zonhoven event in consecutive editions, 2021 and 2019, after the 2020 race was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Belgian riders have now won all four elite men's races in the 2021-2022 season.

Betsema's win in the elite women's event also means that all four winners have come from one nation, this time The Netherlands.

After settling for runner-up in the two previous races, last season's overall bronze medallist took the victory in 47:44 over seven laps.

Dutchwoman Lucinda Brand followed 46 seconds later to claim silver and her compatriot Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado finished in 48:52 to take 25 points and the bronze medal.

It was a dominant performance from Dutch riders as they occupied the top seven places.

The men's results leave Iserbyt in first on 135 points, Belgium's Quinten Hermans second with 107 and Aerts in third with 104 points.

Meanwhile Betsema tops the women's table with 125 points.

Brand follows close behind on 122 points while her countrywoman Marianne Vos occupies third with 102 points.
