Wu was the second skater to false start in the final as Jordan Pierre-Gilles of Canada was also penalised, leaving Liu, fellow Hungarian John-Henry Krueger and Kazakhstan’s Denis Nikisha to battle it out for the title.

Liu proved too strong, winning in 40.771secs to overcome Krueger who crossed in 40.805, while Nikisha came third in 40.876.

However, Liu’s hopes of a double at the Beijing 2022 test event were dashed when he was penalised in the men’s 1,500m after causing a crash that resulted in another restart.

Russia’s Semen Elistratov then seized his opportunity to secure a place at the top of the podium after finishing in 2:18.285.

Adil Galiakhmetov of Kazakhstan was second in 2:18.680 as China’s An Kai completed the top three after crossing in 2:18.864.

"This is an amazing victory," said Elistratov in a report by China.org.

"We trained very hard and I am grateful that the effort paid off today. I want to thank the Chinese people who paid tribute to all the athletes.

"The Olympic gold medal will only go to someone who really deserves it and someone who works honestly.

"I really like this venue and I'll try my best to come here again during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics."

Natalia Maliszewska of Poland triumphed in the women’s 500m in 43.226 with Italy’s Arianna Fontana coming second in 43.314 and South Korea’s Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong finishing third in 43.410.

Lee Yu-bin of South Korea came out on top in the women’s 1,500m, crossing in 2:21.833 as Canada’s Courtney Sarault had to settle for second in 2:22.167.

Third place went to Kristen Santos of the United States who came home in 2:22.176.
