Australian basketball star Liz Cambage is to appear at a private hearing as the investigation into an incident during a Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games warm-up match against Nigeria approaches its conclusion.

The London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist plays for the Las Vegas Aces in the United States' Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), but withdrew from the Australian team for Tokyo 2020 citing mental health concerns.

She said the prospect of playing in an Olympic bubble was "terrifying" and revealed she was having to take medication to handle her anxiety.

Prior to the announcement, reports had emerged that Cambage was involved in a physical and verbal altercation with Nigerian players during the warm-up match, as well as a claim that she had broken COVID-19 protocols by leaving the team's hotel to head out into Las Vegas.

The 30-year-old admitted there was a "physical altercation" and "words were exchanged" through social media, but added: "I'm hearing things that aren't true at all flying around."

She also strongly denied she had left the team bubble.

Basketball Australia's integrity division opened an investigation into the allegations.

As reported by Nine's Wide World of Sports, players from both the Australian and Nigerian teams have been interviewed as part of a review of the incident, and Cambage will now appear virtually as all parties are given a final opportunity to air their views to the inquiry.

If found guilty, Cambage could face a suspension from the national team and appearing in Australia's Women's National Basketball League.

The investigation is centred exclusively on the incident in the Nigeria game, with the claim she left the team bubble not covered.

Cambage missed the 2020 WNBA season due to health concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

She contracted the virus at the start of September, missing five WNBA matches for the Aces before her return in the final game of the regular season against the Phoenix Mercury.

Cambage was born in London to an Australian mother and Nigerian father, but was raised in Australia since she was an infant.

She won 2018 Commonwealth Games gold with Australia and silver at the Women's World Cup in the same year, while her 53 points for the Dallas Wings against the New York Liberty in July 2018 is a WNBA record for a single match.

Without Cambage at Tokyo 2020, the Opals were beaten 79-55 in the quarter-finals by eventual winners the United States.
