Panama produced a stunning performance to upset Group B leaders Venezuela and secure qualification into the super round at the Under-23 World Baseball Softball Confederation Baseball World Cup.

Prior to their meeting on the final match of competition today, Venezuela had already secured their place in the super round.

Panama hung onto Venezuela's coattails in the opening innings, before Rhandall Sanchez hit a two-run double in the fifth and pinch hitter Enoc Watts scored the winning run in the seventh.

"This was a key game," said Panama's manager Cristobal Giron.

"We wanted to finish well and wanted to take our chances to get to the super round with the same record as Venezuela.

"We are here to respect our commitment to the country."

Colombia also secured their place in the super round with a 5-4 win over South Korea.

In the other Group B match, The Netherlands - who beat Panama earlier in the tournament - lost to Nicaragua, with both teams qualifying for the placement round.

In Group A, defending champions and hosts Mexico maintained their unbeaten record, defeating Germany 3-1, securing their place in the super round.

Chinese Taipei demolished the Dominican Republic 5-0 to move ahead of them in Group A.

The result of the Dominican Republic-Cuba match tomorrow will determine who qualifies for the super round behind Mexico, with Chinese Taipei waiting nervously.

"It's right, we can only watch tomorrow's game and wait," said Chinese Taipei manager Shi-hsin Wu

"We are relaxed, there's not much more we can do."

The group stages conclude tomorrow, with the Dominican Republic's match against Cuba a key decider in the standings.
