The sixth edition of the World Winter Sports Expo in Beijing has taken place as the Chinese capital continues final preparations for the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The event has been run annually since 2016 by the Beijing Olympic City Development Centre and the IDG World Expo China Company.

It is claimed the event will help to boost promote sustainable development of Olympic and Paralympic legacy in the city.

Organisers say they will look to contribute to the construction of a high-tech and green Beijing, enhancing the Chinese capital city’s status as an international sports culture centre.

It is claimed over 200,000 people have visited the event to date, with over 500 brands holding exhibitions over the six years.

The exhibition features guest speakers and a series of forums.

This year’s exhibition opened on Saturday (September 2) and is due to conclude tomorrow (September 7).

Juan Antonio Samaranch, chair of the Beijing 2022 Coordination Commission, spoke virtually at the opening of the event.

Samaranch highlighted the transformation of the Shougang Park from an industrial area into a sport hub, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Italy has been welcomed as the guest country of honour at the event, as the hosts of the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Italian companies were among the exhibitors at the event.

The event forms part of China’s International Fair for Trade and Service.

The event is part of the Chinese Government's aim of having 300 million people involved in winter sports by the 2022 Games.

Beijing 2022 is scheduled to take place from February 4 to 20 in 2022.

Events are due to be staged in three main clusters - Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou - with the Chinese capital set to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.

The Beijing 2022 Paralympics are scheduled to run from March 4 to March 13.

The build-up to the Games has been dominated by concerns over human rights, which China has repeatedly rebutted.
