Flora Duffy will aim to become the first triathlete to win Olympic and the World Championship gold in the same year with the Bermudan star heading into the finals in Edmonton with a comfortable lead.

Fresh from her victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Duffy won the super-sprint World Triathlon Championship Series event in Montreal last week

The result extended Duffy’s advantage in the overall series as she tops the standings on 2,791 points heading into the Edmonton event.

American Taylor Spivey is second on 2,324 points, with The Netherlands’ Maya Kingma third on 2,315.

Duffy could equal the record of three women’s world titles should she triumph in Edmonton.

Athletes will complete a two-lap, 1,500-metre swim in Hawrelak Park lake, before tackling eight laps of a a hilly and technical bike course.

The race will conclude with a 10-kilometre run, consisting of four laps around the lake.

Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt will also be hoping to complete the Olympic and World Championship double.

Blummenfelt currently lies second in the men’s rankings with a total of 2,677 points.

He will hope to overtake Britain’s Alex Yee, the man he beat to the Olympic title at Tokyo 2020.

Yee leads the overall standings on 2,716 points.
