The 2021 Formula Kite PanAmerican Championships are set to take place tomorrow in Cabarate in the Dominican Republic for the first time with the event lasting until August 22.

More than 20 competitors from Brazil, Colombia, France, Guadeloupe, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United States and Dominican Republic are set to participate.

Italian athlete Sofia Tomasoni has been tipped for success in the women's division at the championships.

She won the gold medal in the IKA Twin Tip Racing event at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, making her the first woman in history to win a kiteboarding Olympic title.

The 19-year-old has also won the 2019 and 2020 IKA Formula Kite Italian Championships putting her in good stead for the Cabarate competition.

She ranked number one in the world for twin tip racing between 2017 and 2018 before switching to Formula Kite.

Meanwhile for the men, Jacobo Espí of Spain has excited kiteboarding fans and is anticipated to feature at the sport's Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

The championships will be worth 100 ranking points.

Dominican Republic is located on Hispaniola, an island in the Caribbean.

It shares the island with Haiti which has just suffered a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake killing more than 1,400 people.

Despite this, the tournament hosts have remained relatively unscathed and will go ahead with the event.
