The United States won the mixed relay title at the latest round of the World Triathlon Championship Series in Montreal, after defeating New Zealand by five seconds.

The US team of Taylor Spivey, Seth Rider, Kirsten Kasper and Chase McQueen completed the race in 1hr 25min 27sec, as they claimed a narrow victory.

Five seconds behind were the New Zealand line-up of Nicole Van Der Kaay, Dylan McCullough, Ainsley Thorpe and Saxon Morgan, who claimed silver in a time of 1:25.32.

Italy earned the bronze medals with their line-up of Beatrice Mallozzi, Gianluca Pozzatti, Alice Betto and Alessandro Fabian completing the podium in 1:25:46.

Mixed relay triathlon made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 last month, although gold medallists Britain did not send a team to Canada, enabling the US to improve on their silver medal from the Olympics, albeit with a completely different quartet.

The mixed relay saw each team member completing a 300 metre swim, a 6.6 kilometre bike ride and a 1.9 kilometre run.
