Mali and the United States swept aside their respective opponents in their round of 16 games as the knockout stage started at the Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Debrecen.

Following a tight Group D finish which saw the team end up second, Mali defeated South Korea 87-46 to make the quarter-finals.

After the teams were tied at the end of the first quarter, a dominant second half propelled the African nation into the next round, as Sika Kone finished as top scorer with 19 points.

In the next round they face Russia, who won 85-55 against Egypt, with Olesia Tumanova scoring 18 for the victors.

On the other side of the bracket, the US won by 84 points - delivering a 129-45 thumping to Chinese Taipei.

Nine of the 11 players used by the Americans scored 10 points or more - with Payton Verhulst being the top scorer in the game with 18.

Their quarter-final opponents Spain had a tighter finish to their game against Japan, winning 71-64.

Japan had a narrow lead heading into the final quarter - aided by the 20 points scored by top scorer Yua Emura - but were ran over in the final minutes of the game, with Spain outscoring them 19 points to seven in the fourth.

Hosts Hungary won by just six points in a low-scoring 54-48 victory over Italy to qualify for the final eight.

Giulia Natali and Ilaria Panzera scored 14 each for the Italians, contributing to half of their team's tally, to finish as top scorers in the game.

Hungarians Reka Dombai and Eszter Madar both scored 13 and team mate Julia Boros added 10 too.

Group D winners Czech Republic defeated Brazil 74-64 and will face the hosts in the next round.

Finalists from 2019 Australia won 66-35 in their game against Argentina to expectedly progress, and are now set to play Canada in the next round, who defeated unbeaten France 79-72.

Canada finished bottom of the tight Group D, shaking off those disappointing results to make the last eight.
