Those wishing to be volunteers at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have just two weeks until the application deadline closes.

Potential volunteers have until 7pm on August 17 to apply to become one of a team of 13,000 who will lend support at the Games.

This contingent of volunteers will be known as the "Commonwealth Collective" and be based across the West Midlands.

The application process opened in June, and Birmingham 2022 reports that "thousands of people" from Birmingham, the West Midlands and elsewhere have applied so far.

"We have had an amazing response from people who want to be a volunteer at Birmingham 2022 and we would like to thank every single person that has applied so far," said Laura Easton, volunteering special project lead for Birmingham 2022.

"There are now just two weeks left before the deadline on August 17 so I would encourage anyone who has been thinking of applying to get that application in so that they don’t miss out on this opportunity to be part of special team of passionate and dedicated people who will help us to deliver the best ever Commonwealth Games."

Most volunteer roles do not require any formal experience or qualifications.

Full training and uniform will be provided.

Roles include drivers, first-aiders, courtside assistants, kit-carriers, plus meet-and-greet and venue-preparation parts.

The 13,000 volunteers of the Commonwealth Collective will receive approximately 250,000 hours of training.

Applicants must be aged 18 by January 1 2022 and can select preferred areas of interest including event services, accreditation, transport, sport and media.

A total of 25,000 shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview at the Volunteer Selection Centre between September and December 2021, which will be hosted by the Library of Birmingham.

Successful applicants will be notified with a role offer in January 2022.
