Cairo chosen to host Sitting Volleyball World Cup in December

Egypt's capital Cairo is set to host a Sitting Volleyball World Cup in December to round off the season and a variety of sporting events held in the city in 2021.

The World Cup will feature 16 men's and 16 women's teams, with competition scheduled to take place from December 10 to 15 at the Cairo International Stadium.

It is the biggest sitting volleyball event on the World ParaVolley calendar.

The winning teams will be guaranteed a spot at the 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championships in Hangzhou in China.

Anji in China last hosted the World Cup in 2016 and welcomed a record 28 teams - 13 in the women's competition and 15 in the men's.

Paralympic champions the United States and Iran claimed the titles five years ago in the women's and men's categories respectively and qualified for the 2018 World Championships in Arnhem in The Netherlands.

Iran and Russia won the men's and women's titles in 2018.

The World Cup is set to close the 2021 sitting volleyball season - one headlined by the 2021 Paralympics.

Cairo has held the World Men's Handball Championship, =African Sambo Championships, Modern Pentathlon World Championships, Professional Squash Association World Tour Finals and the Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships this year.

It also hosted the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa General Assembly, which saw incumbent President Mustapha Berraf re-elected.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine.
