Turkish aerobic gymnast Ayşe Onbaşı has been named The World Games Athlete of the Month for June, after becoming world champion at senior level for the first time.

With a haul of over 60 medals as a junior, 2016 world junior champion Onbaşı has earned the nickname "The Medal Monster" and added another to her total when she won gold at the Aerobic World Championships.

It was the first medal that Turkey had won at the Championships.

Due to impressing judges with her accuracy at the competition, Onbaşı also received $5,000 (£3,600/€4,250) and now looks towards the Birmingham 2022 World Games, which she looks set to qualify for.

Her idols are Brazilian 2009 World Games champion Marcela Lopez and Aurelie Joly of France, who was a World Games champion in 2009 and 2013.

As The World Games Athlete of the Month, Onbaşı will receive The World Games Athlete of the Month diploma as well as a gift from the official sponsor of the award, Protective Life.

The next World Games is set to take place in Birmingham in the United States from July 7 to 17 2022, after it was pushed back a year to avoid a delay with the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which itself was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
