Judoka Sandrine Martinet and wheelchair tennis player Stéphane Houdet have been selected as the flagbearers for France at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics following a general public vote campaign.

It follows a similar process that confirmed judoka Clarisse Agbegnenou and gymnast Samir Aït Saïd as flagbearers for the ongoing Olympics.

From June 11 to 30, the public were able to select their favourite men's and women's athlete, choosing from a selection of seven Paralympic athletes, as outlined in criteria from the French National Olympic and Sports Committee.

Athletes must be a Paralympic champion in one of the last three editions of the Games or be a Paralympic medallist in two of the last three editions.

After more than 40,000 votes, Rio 2016 champion Martinet and two-time Paralympic gold medallist Houdet were selected.

Martinet claimed her gold medal with a win over Germany's Ramona Brussig in the women's under-52-kilogram category, adding to her silver medal from Beijing 2008.

Houdet won men's doubles gold with Nicolas Peifer in 2016 in the final against Britain's Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics is set to take place from August 24 to September 5, following their postponement from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
