Australia's Tokyo 2020 showjumper Jamie Kermond will miss the Olympic Games here after testing positive for cocaine.

The Australian Olympic Team Selection Committee expelled the 36-year-old from the team after he was initially provisionally suspended.

Kermond failed a drugs test carried out by Sport Integrity Australia on June 26, and reportedly did not board his planned flight to Japan yesterday.

He was confirmed as a member of Australia's equestrian squad for Tokyo 2020 on June 30.

"The Australian Olympic Team Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman has announced that the Australian Olympic Team Selection Committee met and has terminated equestrian athlete Jamie Kermond's membership of the Tokyo 2020 Australian Olympic team," the Australian Olympic Committee said.

Kermond, who can have his B-sample analysed, said the positive result likely came from recreational use.

"I am truly sorry as I have let a lot of people down including my family and team-mates," he said.

"Hopefully one day I can be forgiven for my mistake [and make] amends through better actions and continued contribution to the sport I know and love."
