The Kiwi fourth seed - the runner-up at the last edition of this event in Doha in 2019 - lost the opening two games to Egypt's Karim Abdel Gawad at the University of Chicago's Cathedral Hall.

Gawad, the sixth seed and 2016 world champion, then led 4-0 in the third game before Coll turned things around.

He eventually came through 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6 in 91 minutes after a dramatic shift in momentum.

"You would rather win 3-0 of course, but it sets your stall out for the rest of the tournament," said Coll. 

"They know I am not going to go away and that I will play for as long as I need to, to get the win. 

"I will do some recovery tonight, you know I train this hard back at home to prepare for these sort of matches so I can back up the next day. 

"Jump in the ice bath, smash a lot of food and I’ll be fine."

Coll will play Egypt's second seed Mohamed ElShorbagy in the semi-finals after the 2017 world champion saw off compatriot Fares Dessouky.

ElShorbagy, who will become world number one if he reaches the final, prevailed 11-6, 11-7, 11-5.

In the women's draw, Egypt's second seed Nouran Gohar ensured there would be no double celebration for New Zealand by defeating Joelle King.

Gohar beat the player ranked seventh 11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7.

"Sometimes, the conditions you have to adapt to," she said.

"The court can sometimes be a little bit cold or warm. 

"I think it was a bit dead today so I had to adapt and play more short shots. 

"I am just happy with the way I dealt with it."

France's Camille Serme, the third seed, will play Gohar in the last four after seeing off Egypt's Salma Hany in straight games.

The eighth seed was defeated 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.

Semi-finals will begin in Chicago tomorrow.
