Portuguese island Madeira has been awarded the right to host the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) 2022 Biathle-Triathle World Championships.

The Portuguese Modern Pentathlon Federation (FPPM) put island tow Machico forward to host the event after it successfully staged the European Biathle-Triathle Championships in June 2019.

"As President of the Portuguese Federation I strongly trust we have found the perfect spot for the UIPM 2022 Biathle-Triathle World Championships to be held in Machico," FPPM chief Manuel Barroso said.

Organisers are "aiming for the best competition ever", Barroso added.

UIPM President Klaus Schormann is delighted to see the return of the disciplines following an absence of events throughout the whole of 2020.

"On behalf of the UIPM Executive Board I congratulate the Portuguese Modern Pentathlon Federation on the success of their bid to host the UIPM 2022 Biathle-Triathle World Championships in Machico," Schormann said.

"After such a long break from international competition in all UIPM sports in 2020, we already saw during the UIPM 2021 Laser Run World Championships in Cairo that the appetite for competitions is very strong and the worldwide Biathle-Triathle community will be very excited about this news."

Triathle is a shoot-swim-run competition, while biathle consists only of swimming and running and was designed to train the running and swimming aspects of modern pentathlon in race conditions.

The 2021 UIPM Biathle-Triathle World Championships are due to take place in Weiden in Germany from August 25 to 29.

It will be the first instalment of the competition for two years.

Modern pentathlon - which also features fencing and equestrian events - has been a core sport of the Olympic Games since 1912, despite some attempts to remove it.

The sport will feature at Tokyo 2020 and will take place at the Musashino Forest Sports Plaza and Ajinomoto Stadium from August 5 to 7.

Seventy-two competitors from 27 nations will be competing but Portugal will not be represented.
