Swimmer Andrew Chetcuti and shooter Eleanor Bezzina will share the flagbearing duties for Malta at the Opening Ceremony of Tokyo 2020.

Chetcuti will carry the flag for the second successive Games.

The pair have been selected in line with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) recommendation to have joint flag bearers.

Chetcuti, who is based in the United States of America, is set to compete in the 100m freestyle in his third Games.

Bezzina finished 22nd in the air pistol at Rio 2016.

In Tokyo, she will take part in the 10m air pistol and the 25m sport pistol.

Women are set to outnumber men for the first time in a Maltese Olympic team, which has athletes competing in athletics, badminton, shooting, swimming and weightlifting.

The youngest of the six competitors is 16-year-old Sasha Gatt, who is expected to swim in both 400m and 1500m freestyle.

Joseph Cassar, Maltese Olympic Committee General Secretary, said: "This year’s Games won’t be as extravagant or festive as they normally are and will be staged in a restrictive environment.

"There will be no spectators and there are strict rules that do not allow athletes and officials to mingle.

"However, it will still be a special event that will enable our athletes to fulfil their dream of becoming Olympians."

In line with the regulations, Maltese competitors will enter the village at different times.

Malta has also concluded a special virtual twinning ceremony with Tonosho Town.

COVID-19 restrictions made a visit to the community impossible.

Instead, an online ceremony with an exchange of support videos was made.

The team uniform was also unveiled at the flag announcement.

This will be in the national colours of red and white.

Official suppliers Joma produced the jersey, which is represented in Malta by Full Marks Sporting.
