Fredericton in Canada has been chosen to host 2022's Continental Cup of Curling, just weeks before the start of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

Billed as curling's answer to the Ryder Cup, it is scheduled to take place from January 20 to 23 at Willie O'Ree Place in the Canadian city.

The Continental Cup was established in 2001 and sees North America or Canada compete against the rest of the world.

Fredericton was set to host the 2020 Canada Cup, but this event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Formats and teams for the 2022 Continental Cup are yet to be announced, but Canada is set to be led by the national champions - teams skipped by Scotties Tournament of Hearts winner Kerri Einarson and Tim Hortons Brier winner Brendan Bottcher.

"Fredericton is a world-class city with world-class fans and volunteers, so we have every expectation that the 2022 Continental Cup will be a memorable event," said Amy Nixon, chair of Curling Canada's Board of Governors.

"We shared Fredericton's disappointment at not being able to have the Home Hardware Canada Cup there last season, so being able to make this happen so soon is a real thrill for all of us, and I can't wait to see how Fredericton responds."

It is set to be the 17th edition of the Continental Cup of Curling and the first since the 2020 edition in London in Ontario.

The 2021 edition was to be held in Oakville in Ontario, but was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Europe will look to extend its streak to three straight wins, having lost the previous six before a 2019 victory in Las Vegas.

Fredericton, the capital of New Brunswick, has previously held the 2013 World Seniors and World Mixed Doubles Championships as well as the 1982 World Junior Men's Championship.

The Beijing 2022 Olympics are set to follow soon after the Continental Cup and begin on February 4.
