Matt Scriven has been named the new chief executive of Basketball Australia, taking over the role previously held by Jerril Rechter for two years.

He was appointed following an executive search process led by search and consulting firm SRI.

Rechter announced she would be leaving her position in April 2020 after being part of the recovery process for the National Federation, which was affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In April 2020 she was part of a task force created by Basketball Australia to look at the challenges caused by the virus.

Scriven was most recently the managing director of Nine Melbourne, where he was responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of local news channel Channel 9, newspaper The Age and radio station 3AW.

"The Board is delighted to have identified Matt to lead the organisation," said Basketball Australia chair John Carey.

"He is an exceptional and experienced business executive and commercial leader, and his expertise will be paramount to execute the organisation's strategic objectives to drive participation and commercial outcomes for the sport."

Aside from his work experience, Scriven played state representative basketball at the National Junior Championships and the South East Australian Basketball League for 10 years.

He was most recently a Board director with both the Southeast Melbourne Phoenix and Basketball Hawthorn.

Scriven also worked in marketing and sponsorship for the National Basketball League (NBL) in the late 1990s.

"I am honoured and privileged to be appointed as chief executive of Basketball Australia and I am excited to be charged with the responsibility for the growth of our sport," he said.

"I am looking forward to working with the Basketball Australia team, and partnering with our State Member Associations, the NBL, the Women's National Basketball League, Australian Basketball Players' Association, International Basketball Federation and Sport Australia to deliver on our collective ambitions for the sport.

"We have a unique opportunity to drive increased participation, fan engagement and innovative commercialisation across all tiers of the sport, at a time where the Boomers and the Opals are set to do us proud on the international stage."

Basketball Australia thanked Carolyn Campbell who stepped in as interim chief executive for the last three months.
