Representatives from the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) and the African Sambo Confederation (CAS) have visited Egypt, inspecting preparations for the 2021 African Sambo Championships.

Scheduled to take place from July 29 to 31 in Cairo, it will be the first continental sambo championship held by the country.

Over three days, FIAS vice-president and CAS President Dalil Scalli, FIAS executive director Sergey Tabakov and Sofia Ryazanova, head of the FIAS international department, viewed the facilities due to be used at the African Sambo Championships.

The delegation attended numerous meetings related to the competition and paid a trip to the Olympic training centre for Egyptian national teams.

Athletes and teams representing the country at the Olympics currently train and live at the facility in Cairo.

At the training base, Tabakov gave a presentation on sambo for coaches of national teams, explaining how the sport works.

Following this, FIAS representatives met with the chairman of the Cairo Stadium Administration, with the African Sambo Championships set to take place at the Cairo International Stadium sports complex.

"It was decided to host the continental championship in one of the halls of this stadium," said Ryazanova.

"The stadium itself is huge, with a new renovation and may well become the arena for the World Sambo Championships in the future.

"A competition hall with 1,700 seats was chosen for the continental tournament.

"Inside the complex there are all the necessary premises for the Championships including anti-doping, a medical office, rooms for weighing, undressing and so on."

Accommodation for competitors was also checked and the organisers' proposal to host everyone in one hotel in a bubble system was approved by the FIAS.

The inspection visit ended with a meeting at the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi promised to provide organisational assistance, with organisers highlighting that visa support for participants and help with certain technical issues was needed.
