Ecuador earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw with hosts and defending champions Brazil to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa América.

Brazil were on a run of three straight victories in Group B but their winning streak came to an end at the Estadio Olimpico Pedro Ludovico in Goiania.

Éder Militão gave Brazil the lead eight minutes before the break before Ángel Mena fired a second-half equaliser to give Ecuador the point they needed.

With Peru beating Venezuela 1-0 in Brasília, Ecuador finished in fourth place to qualify to the last eight with three draws and a loss.

André Carrillo's 48-minute strike also ensured Peru’s place in the quarter-finals as they moved into second spot ahead of Colombia.

Brazil opened the scoring against Ecuador on 37 minutes when Militão leapt highest to get on the end of Everton Cebolinha’s free-kick.

Ecuador came out hungry for the second-half and they pulled themselves level on 53 minutes.

A corner was cleared before being headed back towards goal and eventually broke to Mena who calmly applied the finish.

Vinícius Júnior had a huge chance to restore the lead from a Paquetá cross but the Real Madrid winger failed to find the target as Ecuador held on.

Looking to progress to the quarter-finals, Venezuela came flying out of the blocks with Peruvian stopper Pedro Gallese making a couple of big saves to thwart Jefferson Savarino and Sergio Córdova.

After the break, Peru began to assert some dominance and Carrillo took advantage with a powerful right-footed effort to make it 1-0.

That blow was followed up by the news that Ecuador had also scored.

Their equaliser against Brazil meant Venezuela would now have to not only equalise but win the game to progress with 30 minutes left.

Córdova just missed the target while Peña also tried his luck from range but was unable to double the Peruvian lead.

Venezuela boss Peseiro brought the dangerous Rómulo Otero off the bench and he nearly had an immediate impact, sending a free-kick into the side netting.

The final Group A matches are set to take place on Tuesday (June 29) with Uruguay tackling Paraguay in Rio de Janeiro and Bolivia meeting Argentina in Cuiabá.
