World Triathlon has announced the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon Championships have been moved from Almere in The Netherlands to Aviles in Spain, due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The competition is now set to take place on November 6 to 7 in Aviles, after it had to be rescheduled due to restrictions in The Netherlands.

Aviles will hosts elite, under-23 and junior races, as well as the age-group Duathlon World Championships.

The Spanish city hosted the competition in 2016 too, when South Africa's Richard Murray and Britain's Emma Pallant won the men's and women's titles.

Spain is now set to host the competition for a sixth time, following Gernika in 1997, Gijon in 2011, Pontevedra in 2014, Aviles in 2016 and Pontevedra in 2019.

"We are extremely pleased to return to Aviles for what I am absolutely sure that it will be a magnificent event," said World Triathlon President Marisol Casado.

"The city of Aviles is perfect for an event like this one, always ready to welcome athletes from all around the world.

"I want to express all our gratitude to the Major, Marivi Monteserin and the Spanish Federation, for stepping up and show their willingness to host this event in these complicated times so that all athletes can enjoy the Duathlon World Championships this year."

Strict COVID-19 guidelines are due to be in place for the competition.
