A second member of a nine-strong group from Uganda that arrived in Japan on Saturday (June 18) for next month's Tokyo 2020 Olympics has tested positive for COVID-19.

A team coach was isolated after testing positive upon arrival at Narita International Airport, east of Tokyo, despite reportedly being fully vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine and testing negative before he landed.

The remaining party then checked into their hotel in their host town, Izumisano in Osaka Prefecture.

Yesterday, the entire delegation and a city official were deemed to have been in close contact with the first infected individual and the party were asked to remain in their hotel and refrain from training until July 3.

A second member of the party has now shown up positive for COVID-19, Kyodo News has reported.

The group are reportedly Ugandan athletes competing in boxing, weightlifting and swimming, as well as coaches.

They are the first batch of athletes from the country that are set to compete at the Games.

Their departure from Uganda was delayed because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the African country.

When they arrived in their host town, Izumisano Mayor Hiroyasu Chiyomatsu asked the athletes to refrain from training "for some time".

They will also "require daily testing and ensure strict infection prevention and control practices so that we can send them off to the Games safely", Chiyomatsu said.
