Croatia became the latest side to reach the last 16 of UEFA Euro 2020 after defeating Scotland 3-1 in Glasgow in a match where a place in the next round of the tournament was the prize for the winner.

2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia took the lead in the crucial game in Group D at Hampden Park in the 17th minute thanks to a low strike from Nikola Vlašić.

Scotland scored their first goal of the tournament three minutes before the break levelling when Callum McGregor took advantage of a misplaced Croatia clearance to make it 1-1.

Both teams had to go for the win in the second half as a draw was no good for either side, and Croatia retook the lead with a stunning strike from range as Luka Modrić curled the ball into the net for 2-1.

Victory was secured in the 77th minute when Ivan Perišić headed home from a corner to make it 3-1, with Croatia finishing second in the group on goal difference with four points.

In the other game in the group both England and the Czech Republic were assured of a knockout berth before a ball was kicked at Wembley Stadium in London.

Top spot was the prize for the winners, and England started the contest the strongest with Raheem Sterling hitting the post in the second minute.

Sterling was the man to break the deadlock ten minutes later as he headed in at the far post from a Jack Grealish cross.

England held on for a 1-0 win, topping the group with seven points, and becoming the first side to win a group at the European Championships while scoring only two goals.

They also kept clean sheets in all three matches - the first time England have achieved that feat in the group stage of a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup, which they went on to win on home soil.

The group stage concludes tomorrow with the final round of matches in Groups E and F.

In Group E, Sweden who are already through, play Poland, while Spain face Slovakia, with all three of those teams in with a chance of progressing from the group.

In Group F, France, who are already through, take on holders Portugal, while Germany face Hungary, with all three of those teams in with a chance of advancing.
