The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) has announced that 140 positive COVID-19 cases have so far been reported at the Copa América, overshadowing the latest round of fixtures which saw Argentina go top of Group A.

The number is up from the 66 cases reported during the last update on Thursday (June 17).

CONMEBOL said in a statement that out of 15,235 tests, the number of people infected was 0.9 per cent.

"Most of the affected are workers, members of squads and outsourced staffers," said CONMEBOL.

"In comparison with the previous figures, the incidence of the coronavirus is lower, which is a clear sign that pre-emptive measures and health protocols are working as expected."

This claim is despite cases more than doubling.

Chile admitted on Sunday (June 20) that some of its players violated COVID-19 protocols by inviting a barber to the team hotel while in the city of Cuiabá in Brazil.

UEFA are facing similar issues at Euro 2020, following the positive COVID-19 case of Scotland's Billy Gilmour, who will miss today's game with Croatia.

England's Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount are set to miss their match against the Czech Republic after they were deemed as close contacts of the Chelsea youngster.

On the latest day of Copa América action, Argentina remained undefeated in Group A to go two points clear at the top of the table following a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha in Brasilia.

Despite an even match - which saw Paraguay dominate possession and have more shots - it was the favourites who took the three points after an early goal from Papu Gómez in the 10th minute.

Lionel Messi played the ball to Ángel Di María, who found Gómez with a perfectly-slotted through ball, leaving the striker with plenty of time and space to score what would be the winner.

In the other Group A tie, Uruguay were held to a 1-1 draw against Chile, meaning both sides lost ground on Argentina.

Chile had just one shot on target at Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá - and they made it count.

Blackburn's English-born striker Ben Brereton - who recently made his debut for Chile - set up Eduardo Vargas, who scored from a tight angle to give them the lead.

Despite having most of the chances, Uruguay's equaliser came halfway through the second half thanks to an own goal from Arturo Vidal.

From there, Uruguay could not find a winner, meaning they sit in fourth on one point after two matches.

With a break tomorrow, play resumes on Wednesday (June 23) with Ecuador against Peru and Brazil against Colombia in Group B.

The tournament is being hosted in Brazil after it was removed from Colombia - due to civil unrest - and Argentina because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
