Mexico, the United States and Italy secured the final women’s team quota places at the last qualification event for the archery competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The three countries secured their Olympic berths after taking gold, silver and bronze respectively in the women’s recurve team discipline in Paris, France.

Mexico, whose team consisted of Ana Vazquez, Aida Roman and Alejandra Valencia topped the standings after the qualification round in the morning.

It looked like they were going to come unstuck in the quarter-finals when they trailed 4-0 to Indonesia, but they battled back and eventually took the contest on a shoot-off.

This set up a semi-final with Italy, which Mexico took 5-1 to seal their Tokyo 2020 place.

The United States, whose team featured Casey Kaufhold, Mackenzie Brown and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez, sealed their Olympic place at the semi-final stage with an emphatic 6-0 win over Spain.

The last quota place at Tokyo 2020 would be decided in the bronze medal match, an all European affair between Spain and Italy.

The Italian team of Tatiana Andreoli, Lucilla Boari and Chiara Rebagliati secured victory with a 5-3 win.

Both teams in the gold medal match had already achieved their main objective of booking an Olympic place, and it was Mexico that took gold after beating the US 5-3.

Today’s three qualifiers join Belarus, China, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Britain, hosts Japan, Korea, Russia and Ukraine in the women’s recurve line-up.

The individual competitions are due to take centre stage on the final day of the qualifier tomorrow, with places in the men’s and women’s recurve events up for grabs.

The archery competition at Tokyo 2020 is due to take place at Yumenoshima Park Archery Field in Tokyo from July 23 to 31.
