The Global Martial Arts Association (GAMMA) Asian MMA Championships has been rescheduled for August in Cholpon Ata in Kyrgyzstan, it has been announced.

The event will now take place between August 24 and 28.

It had originally been due to take place between July 21 and 26.

The GAMMA hopes that the short delay will allow more competitors to take part as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

The event is set to bring together male and female athletes from GAMMA's Asian National Federations to compete in a total of 32 weight classes in two divisions: mixed martial arts and striking MMA.

Each division will have 16 weight categories, nine for males and seven for females.

"Our prime motivation to postpone the tournament to August is to minimise the impact of travel restrictions and strengthen the confidence of the participating delegations to travel," said GAMMA President Alexander Engelhardt.

"Thereby, reinforcing the quality of the tournament."

Kyrgyzstan MMA & PF KG Federation President Babur Tolbaev is confident that the event will be able to take place and be a success.

"We are excited to welcome our Asian friends and international delegates to our beautiful country," he said.

"We have all been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and hope that hosting this Championship is a step forward in the resumption of international competitions not only for mixed martial arts but for all sports."

Earlier this month, GAMMA announced it had relocated its European Senior MMA Championships from the Czech Republic to Greece due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Czech capital Prague was originally due to host the event, but the GAMMA has decided to move it to Greek city Lamia.

It was also confirmed new dates for the Championships would be September 29 to October 3.
