Day one of the inaugural World Test Championship final was a complete washout, with no play possible in Southampton.

New Zealand - the world's top-ranked side - and India are contesting the final of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) new red-ball event.

No play was possible today, with heavy rain falling at the English venue.

Test matches usually last up to five days - after which it will be scored a draw of there is no result - but this match may extend to six days as the ICC hopes to get a result in the first-ever final of the World Test Championship.

With more rain forecast at the Ageas Bowl in the coming days, the extra time may well be needed.

Conditions were so poor today that even the toss was not held.

India have already named their team - including two spinners in Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin - but could still choose to change the 11 with no toss yet held.

Philip Barker chronicled cricket's long journey to crowning its first Test world champions in today's blog post, which you can read here.
