Canada, the United States and Venezuela progressed to the super round at the Americas Olympic baseball qualifier for Tokyo 2020 with victories on the second day of the event in Florida.

The three sides are guaranteed a place in the super round, which will determine who secures the sole place available at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics from the tournament.

The US - bronze medallists at Beijing 2008, the last Olympics to feature baseball - were the first team to qualify for the next stage after they edged out Dominican Republic 8-6 in Group A at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

A triple from Luke Williams proved crucial for the US, who were made to work hard for their victory by a spirited Dominican Republic side in a rain-affected contest.

Venezuela and Canada won their respective Group B contests to join the US in the super round.

Both matches were tight affairs as Canada narrowly defeated Cuba 6-5 and Venezuela beat Colombia 3-2.

In the super round, the qualifying teams will play the two sides from the group they were not a part of.

The result against the other qualifier from the same group will carry over and count to the points tally.

Teams finishing second and third after the super round will still have a chance to qualify for Tokyo 2020 through the final qualifier, due to be held in Mexico next month.

The qualifier is due to continue tomorrow.
