Kazakhstan's Rakhat Bekbolat stormed to victory in the men's 102-kilogram contest at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Junior World Championships in Tashkent, although was not able to match gaudy numbers he put up at the same location last month.

The 17-year-old from Kazakhstan, who holds the junior record in the clean and jerk and youth records in clean and jerk and total, ended with 174-202-377 in Uzbekistan today.

Bekbolat needed two attempts to clear 202kg in the clean and jerk before being unsuccessful with his third - at 209 - but the gold medals were already wrapped up by that stage.

Bulgaria's Vasil Marinov attempted 208kg before Bekbolat's final lift, which would have elevated the Bulgarian into the lead on total, but was unsuccessful.

Georgia's Zaza Lomtadze took the bronze medal on total and clean and jerk, while the Belarusian Sharankou Siarhei claimed the snatch bronze.

There was home glory in the women's 87kg, with Tursunoy Jabborova top of the pile by some distance and finishing on 111-133-244.

American Avery Owens was second, with 93-118-211, and Iran's Yekta Jamali third across the board.

It is Iran's first-ever medal at the event.

The IWF Junior World Championships is a "gold" tournament in Olympic qualification and overage lifters were permitted to compete to earn ranking points, ahead of the window shutting tomorrow when this event draws to a close.

Austria's Sarah Fischer was one such athlete in the women's 87kg, but failed to make a total.

The men's and women's super-heavyweight contests are scheduled for the final day tomorrow.
