Teenager Natalia Grossman delivered a superb display in front of 2,500 spectators to secure the first International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup win of her fledgling career in Salt Lake City.

The 19-year-old American was the only athlete to top all four problems in the women’s boulder event as she claimed a comprehensive victory with four tops and three zones at the Industry SLC outdoor venue.

French teenager Oriane Bertone, 16, backed up her second-place finish at last month’s IFSC World Cup in Switzerland with another silver medal after registering three tops and four zones.

The podium was completed by 20-year-old American Brooke Raboutou, who pushed her two rivals close only to fail to solve the last boulder problem, closing with three tops and three zones.

"It's a dream," said Grossman.

"It was so special to share this moment with my best friend Brooke.

"To be able to make the World Cup final together is something we have always dreamed of, and it’s so surreal, so exciting to have a crowd."

Japan’s Miho Nonaka finished fourth followed by Austrian duo Jessica Pilz and Johanna Färber who came fifth and sixth respectively.

The competition closed with the men’s boulder event where Adam Ondra of the Czech Republic managed to solve all four problems to add his 21st World Cup gold medal to an impressive collection.

Finishing with four tops and four zones, the 28-year-old’s triumph comes after winning the opening World Cup of the season in Meiringen.

It is the first time in four years that a male climber has won two consecutive boulder golds on the World Cup circuit since South Korea’s Chon Jong-won achieved that feat in 2017.

"It was definitely unexpected," said Ondra, who will hope to star at Tokyo 2020 where sport climbing will make its Olympic debut.

"But most importantly, it was amazing to climb in front of a huge crowd after two years, it felt surreal.

"I’m kind of trying to stay on the ground, because in terms of pressure this still feels like a children’s game compared to the Olympics.

"In Tokyo it will be way more stressful, way more difficult. I’ll keep training and we’ll see."

France’s Mejdi Schalck, 17, claimed silver with three tops and four zones as he secured his first World Cup podium in only his third appearance.

The bronze medal went to Austria’s Jakob Schubert who registered three tops and three zones.

Just outside of the medal positions were Japan’s Kokoro Fujii and Slovenians Anze Peharc and Gregor Vezonik.

Salt Lake City is due to stage more IFSC World Cup events in five days' time when boulder and speed competitions take place from May 28 to 30.
