Dadaon claimed gold in the men’s 200 metres freestyle S4 category winning in 2min 51.80 sec.

Dadaon bettered Roman Zhdanov’s world record, that the Russian set in 2019, in winning in Madeira, and Zhdanov took silver on this occasion in 2:54.74.

The podium was completed by Luigi Beggiato of Italy who took bronze in 3:09.26.

An Americas record also fell courtesy of Brazil’s Gabriel Bandeira, who claimed his fifth gold of the week in winning the men’s 100m freestyle S14.

Bandeira was victorious in 51.60sec, with two Russians completing the podium, as Viacheslav Emeliantsev took silver in 52.44 and compatriot Mikhail Kuliabin won bronze in 53.84.

The penultimate night of finals at the Penteada Olympic Pools Complex in Funchal was a golden one for Ukraine as the country won nine golds, a haul that puts them to the top of the medal table.

Ukraine’s gold rush started in the second final of the night with Anna Stetsenko winning the women’s 400m freestyle S13, before the next race the men’s 200m individual medley SM8 was won by Denys Dubrov.

Ukrainian swimmers claimed three golds in men’s 50m events, with Andrii Trusov taking the S7 freestyle title, Roman Bondarenko winning the S2 backstroke and Serhii Palamarchuk victorious in the S3 freestyle.

The good night for male Ukrainian swimmers continued with three golds in 100m disciplines, courtesy of Mykhailo Serbin in the S11 backstroke, Maksym Krypak in the S10 freestyle and Yevhenii Bohodaiko in the SB6 breaststroke, before Ukraine finished the night in style by winning the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay 49 points.

Gold medals also went to swimmers from Russia, Italy, Britain, Spain and Hungary, while Ihar Boki of Belarus won his fifth gold and sixth medal of the event as he defended his European title in the men’s 400m freestyle S13.

Away from the pool World Para Swimming today announced that the complex in Madeira would host the 2022 World Para Swimming Championships from June 12 to 18.

The competition was originally due to take place in September this year but was postponed to avoid clashing with the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Announcing the news the head of World Para Swimming Craig Nicholson said: “We are in the middle of the European Open Championships in Madeira and the Organising Committee has delivered a great event, especially under difficult circumstances due to COVID-19.

“This is a familiar venue to many athletes and a pool that has seen plenty of world records. We are happy to return here next year for the 2022 World Championships."
