Morgan Cibilic made it through to his third Finals Day in the four-stop Australian leg of the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour after advancing to the last eight in Rottnest Island.

The Australian’s battle with Italian Leonardo Fioravanti was one of just three men’s round-of-16 heats to take place before competition was called off for the day due to unfavourable surfing conditions.

Cibilic defeated Fioravanti by 12.50 points to 10.77 to secure a quarter-final meeting with compatriot Julian Wilson.

Wilson found the better waves as he overcame South Africa’s Jordy Smith by 13.00 to 11.20.

Liam Brien became the third Australian to advance to Finals Day when he beat Hawaiian Seth Moniz by 10.83 to 8.10.

He will meet the winner of Frenchman Michel Bourez versus Brazilian Miguel Pupo.

Bourez’s clash with Pupo was among five men’s heats that were unable to be completed today.

WSL claims there is "plenty more swell on the way" as surfers wait to be given the call to resume competition.

The quarter-finals of the women’s event, which features four Australians, have yet to be contested.

Nikki van Dijk is set to go up against compatriot Tyler Wright, while fellow Australians Sally Fitzgibbons and Isabella Nichols face Hawaiian opponents.

Fitzgibbons is due to tackle Malia Manuel and Nichols has been pitted against Carissa Moore for a place in the semi-finals.

The other quarter-final sees France’s Johanne Defay take on Japan’s Amuro Tsuzuki.
