With the two finalists in each weight division earning a quota spot at this year's rearranged Olympics, Asian Games bronze medallist Saleh Al-Sharabaty led the way for the home delegation at the Kempinski Hotel.

He qualified after winning his men's under-80 kilograms semi-final against Akbar Aitakhunov of Kyrgyzstan, 36-6.

Al-Sharabaty was earlier similarly comfortable in his first round clash against Wael Al-Farraj, who was representing the refugee team.

Syrian-born Al-Farraj is the first athlete to have gained a black belt from the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation's academy at the Azraq refugee camp in Jordan.

He could still make Tokyo 2020 as part of the Refugee Olympic Team but was beaten comfortably by Al-Sharabaty, 26-1.

Liu Wei-ting of Chinese Taipei booked the other Tokyo 2020 place in the division after winning in the last four against Khurram Mehtarshoev of Tajikistan, 19-1.

Jordan's second qualifier came in the women's under-67kg class where Asian Games champion Julyana Al-Sadeq booked her spot without stepping onto the mat.

With only three athletes entering the competition, Al-Sadeq received a bye to the final to automatically seal a Tokyo 2020 place.

Asian Championships gold medallist Nigora Tursunkulova of Uzbekistan won the only match in the division against Qatar's Maram Fatnassi to also qualify, 26-6.

In the men's under-68g, Chinese Taipei's former world silver medallist Huang Yu-jen saw off Ahmad Bahlool of Palestine 20-1 to qualify.

Ulugbek Rashitov of Uzbekistan will join him in Tokyo after his 17-6 win over Kazakhstan's two-time World Championship medallist Kairat Sarymsakov.

Asian Games champion Su Po-ya was another celebrating from Chinese Taipei after she defeated Iran's world silver medallist Mahla Momenzadeh 23-4.

World silver medallist Trương Thị Kim Tuyến of Vietnam also earned a spot by seeing off Asian Games bronze medallist Fariza Aldangorova of Kazakhstan, 26-12.

The second and final day of competition will take place tomorrow, with Olympic berths set to be decided in the men's under-58kg and over-80kg and the women's under-57kg and over-67kg.

The Paralympic qualifier will be held on the following day.

Amman was originally awarded the qualifier in February 2020 after it was moved from Wuxi in China, as the coronavirus pandemic began to take hold.

Holding the event last year proved impossible but Jordan has kept the competition despite Tokyo 2020 being moved back a year.
