Celen had finished as the runner-up to Spain’s Joan Reinoso Figuerola in the time trial two days ago, but the riders swapped places in the 40 kilometre road race.

The pair were separated by just three seconds at the finish with Celen topping the standings after crossing the line in 1 hour 8min 27sec.

United States’ Matthew Rodriguez was third at 49 seconds down.

Further Belgian success came in the men’s H1 competition, as Maxime Hordies lapped his rivals on the 50km course to triumph in 1:54:18.

A photo finish was required in the men’s H4 road race after The Netherlands’ Jetze Plat and Austria’s Thomas Fruhwirth both finished in 1:41:37.

Plat was ultimately crowned as the winner.

Tim De Vries triumphed in the men’s H5 race by completing the 70 kilometre distance in 1:46:34, with his compatriot Mitch Valize second at 1:11 down.

France’s Loic Vergnaud completed the top three, ending four seconds behind Valize.

Dutch success continued in the women’s events, with Jennette Jansen achieving a time of 1:50:41 to win the 60km H4 road race.

Jansen enjoyed a six-minute cushion over her nearest challengers.

Chantal Haenen edged American star Oksana Masters in the women’s H5 road race, with both riders finishing in 1:54:21.

The Dutch rider crossed the line ahead of Masters, who had won the time trial event two days prior.

A sprint finish in the women’s T2 race saw United States’ Monica Sereda claim gold in 1:09:50, with Britain’s Hannah Dines second on the same time as the winner.

The Netherlands’ Marieke Van Soest was third at eight seconds down.
