Russian gymnasts impressed in the qualification for women’s disciplines on the first day of the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Basel, Switzerland.

2019 European Games champion Angelina Melnikova of Russia topped the standings in the all-around category with a score of 55.991.

Compatriot Viktoriia Listunova, the 2019 world junior all-around champion, was second with a score of 55.465.

Third went to another Russian in Vladislava Urazova with a score of 55.299, although she was not eligible for the final due to the two athletes per country rule.

In fourth place was 2020 European beam and floor champion Larisa Iordache of Romania with a score of 54.698, enough to secure her a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

In the individual apparatus disciplines, the top qualifier in the women’s vault was Britain’s Jessica Gadirova with a score of 14.516.

In second place was Melnikova with 14.450, with Switzerland’s Giulia Steingruber just behind her in third with 14.449.

Russian gymnasts took the top two places in the uneven bars, with Melnikova top with 14.625.

In second place was her compatriot Urazova with 14.500, with third place going to Elisabeth Seitz of Germany with 14.233.

On the beam the top qualifier was Iordache of Romania with 13.466.

Behind her were two gymnasts who both scored 13.433 - Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands in second and Amelie Morgan of Britain in third.

The floor standings were led by Melnikova with a score of 14.300, with compatriot Listunova second with 14.033 and Gadirova third with 13.866.

Men’s qualification is scheduled for both the all-around discipline and individual apparatus finals tomorrow, with the men’s and women’s all-around finals due to follow on Friday (April 23).
