Ranked 13th, Skarbonkiewicz made the women's final, partially due to a last 16 victory over Uzbekistan's Gulistan Perdibaeva 15-14, despite her opponent being ranked fourth.

The American then defeated Russian fifth seed Alina Pastukhova 15-9 in the quarter-final, before making the final after a 15-9 win over eighth seed Zarifa Huseynova of Azerbaijan.

She met second seed Yulia Salabai of Russia in the final after her opponent defeated Romanian 26th seed Denisa Serban 15-12 in the quarter-final and American third seed Zoe Kim 15-10 in the semi-final.

Despite her lower seeding, Skarbonkiewicz claimed the 15-7 win in the final to take the gold medal, with Salabai claiming the silver.

Both Huseynova and Kim won the bronze medals.

In the men's competition, 26th seed Sovar achieved upsets on his way to the final, starting with a last 16 victory against 10th seed Lee Yehun of South Korea by a score of 15-12.

This was followed up by a quarter-final victory over Spanish 15th seed Asier Olangua 15-10, before defeating American third seed Colby Harley 15-10 in the semi-finals.

His final opponent was 25th seed Park Junseong of South Korea who knocked out Sovar's top seed compatriot Radu Nitu 15-11 in the quarter-final, and Russian 29th seed Arseniy Shelekhov, in a tight 15-14 contest.

The two outside contenders staged a close final, but Sovar claimed the gold by a score of 15-13.

Park won the silver, while Harley and Shelekov won the bronze medals.

Action is scheduled to continue tomorrow with the junior team sabre events.
