Svecovs made an impressive start to the competition in Hungary’s capital city, finishing as the runner-up in the fencing discipline to Egypt’s Ahmed Hamed.

He followed up a seventh place in the swimming event by placing second in the riding competition.

The effort gave Svecovs a cushion heading into the laser run, the final event of the competition.

A time of 11min 19.23sec proved enough for the Latvian athlete to cross the line in first place, as he ended the competition on 1,478 points.

Svecovs’ maiden World Cup victory came in the same week that the Latvian Modern Pentathlon Federation announced the death of his first coach Leonīds Dmitrijevs.

Victory boosts the Latvian athletes' hopes of qualifying for the rescheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Hamed was rewarded for a consistent series of performances across the disciplines to finish as the runner-up.

Germany’s Patrick Dogue earned the bronze medal.

The UIPM released a statement after the final to apologise to viewers on UIPM TV, after technical difficulties meant they were unable to show the laser run live.

The UIPM said: "After the fencing and the riding, technical issues prevented us from live-streaming the exciting climax of the day and we are sorry for the inconvenience and disappointment caused.

"A replay of today’s laser run will shortly be available at UIPMTV.org and we will endeavour to ensure that coverage of future competitions is provided live and uninterrupted.

"Unprecedented numbers of people are signing up to view online coverage of modern pentathlon and we are constantly working to improve the stability of our dedicated live-streaming platform for existing and new audiences."
