Alisa Camplin-Warner, who became Australia’s first female Winter Olympics gold medallist at Salt Lake City 2002, has been named as deputy Chef de Mission for the national team at Beijing 2022.

Camplin-Warner, who married Oliver Warner in 2010, won the aerials skiing title in Salt Lake City, despite competing with two fractured ankles following a training accident.

Her success followed the unexpected triumph of Steven Bradbury in short track speed skating at Salt Lake City, when he became the first Australian Winter Olympics champion in a 1000 metres race where all his rivals fell at the final bend.

Now 46, Camplin-Warner was performance manager for the Australian team at Pyeongchang 2018 and was the team’s Chef de Mission at the Innsbruck 2012 Youth Olympic Games.

She has also been on the Board for the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) for more than 15 years as well as previously holding numerous leadership roles in sport, including deputy chair of the Australian Sports Commission, chair of the Australian Sports Foundation and director of the Collingwood Football Club.

Geoff Lipshut, Australia’s Chef de Mission for Beijing 2022, added: "I look forward to working closely with Alisa over the months ahead in the lead-up, and then on the ground in February next year.

"Alisa's background as an Olympic champion and then in corporate life makes her the ideal fit for the team.

"She is one of our sporting greats and I am really pleased that the 2022 team athletes and their coaches will have an opportunity to benefit from her involvement."

Camplin-Warner commented: "I care deeply about every one of our athletes’ Olympic journeys.

"They have all made sacrifices and invested their lives to represent their country and discover their ultimate potential.

"Meeting each of them, where they are at, and providing what they need to be as mentally, physically and emotionally ready for their moment is incredibly important to me.

"I competed in my first Games as a rookie and my second as an Olympic gold medallist, recovering from serious injuries.

"I’ve also worked two Games with our TV media broadcasters and held leadership roles in two prior Olympic Winter Games teams, so I feel really well equipped to support all members of the team in predicting and working through anything that might come our way.

"It’s an absolute honour to be named as deputy Chef de Mission for Beijing 2022 - you can never take these very special appointments for granted!

"Beijing 2022 will bring forward different opportunities for our team, and after living in Hong Kong for the last few years, I have a great sense of the cultural and environmental landscape we will be operating in.

"I can’t wait to help our athletes, coaches and officials with preparations to maximise our performances at the Games.

"The Australian Olympic Team did that for me in 2002 and 2006, and it’s a privilege to be serving the next generation with that same level of passion and commitment to excellence."

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is due to take place from February 4 to 20 next year.
