Newly-crowned giant slalom world champion Mathieu Faivre is to contest the discipline at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Ski World Cup in Bansko tomorrow.

Two giant slalom races are scheduled to take place in the Bulgarian resort tomorrow and Sunday (February 28).

France's Faivre will be considered a strong contender for both, having clinched a giant slalom world title in Cortina d'Ampezzo last week.

Compatriot Alexis Pinturault will be aiming to get back on track after a disastrous World Championships.

He had been the pre-race favourite for the giant slalom title but lost his inside ski and span out in his second run, ultimately failing to finish.

Pinturault leads the men's World Cup standings for giant slalom with 440 points and is trailed by Switzerland's Marco Odermatt on 400.

Croatia's Filip Zubcic is also in contention for the crystal globe on 368.

This weekend's contest will also have an impact on the overall World Cup standings, which are again led by Pinturault on 924.

His nearest opponent is once more Odermatt on 699, while Austria's Marco Schwarz is third on 666.
