Former European champion and world bronze medallist Hubert Leuchter, who died on February 21 aged 71 after a long illness, has been commemorated by World Taekwondo Europe (WTE), of whom he was an honorary member.

Leuchter won bantamweight (under-58kg) bronze for West Germany at the second World Taekwondo Championships at Seoul in 1975, losing to home fighter and eventual champion Son Tae Hwan in the semi-final.

"He won deservedly, he was just faster than me," Leuchter said later.

He earned another bronze at the first European Championships at Barcelona in 1976, and took gold in the next edition in Munich two years later.

In 1979, aged 30, he added a second world bronze at the Championships held in Sindelfingen.

Leuchter, feared for his high kicks, retired in the 1980s and turned to coaching.

"He was a taekwondo legend - hugely successful but always humble," said the WTE in a tribute.

"100 per cent committed to our sport, but never thinking about his personal advantage.

"Never did he talk about an opponent with anything else than fairness and respect.

"With his knowledge, his passion, and his integrity, he left a lasting impression on countless players as well as younger colleagues.

"Hubert Leuchter was one of the taekwondo greats and a loveable and sincere person.

"He will be sorely missed."
