Sambo received provisional IOC recognition in 2018.

The three years of provisional IOC recognition is due to expire later this year, but FIAS is hopeful full recognition will be forthcoming.

Shestakov told Russia’s official state news agency TASS that the topic is due to be discussed by the IOC later this year.

"The issue of permanent recognition will be discussed at the upcoming Session of the IOC," Shestakov said.

"Today we are one of the leading types of martial arts, and dry numbers speak about it, this year we still managed to hold the World Championship, albeit without spectators due to the pandemic, and the broadcast of the tournament was conducted by Eurosport.

"The statistics of views showed that we had a fantastic response. 

"The rest of the points and provisions that were necessary for filing an application for permanent recognition have been fulfilled."

"Next, work will begin on getting into the programme of the Olympic Games, this is a difficult process, and it may take a long time," Shestakov added.

"But there are excellent options that we are working on."

The IOC Executive Board are expected to discuss sambo's application at one of its meetings later this year. 

The next IOC Session is scheduled to take place from March 10 to 12, although it is unlikely FIAS' recognition will be discussed there. 

The Session is to take place remotely in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

An IOC Session is also scheduled prior to the re-arranged 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which are due to begin on July 23.
