Group matches are taking place over five contests with each tie comprising of a men’s and women’s singles and a men’s, women’s and mixed doubles fixture.

Denmark produced an almost flawless opening night performance as they won all five contests without dropping a game.

Viktor Axelsen in the men’s singles, Line Christophersen in the women’s singles, Mads Pieler Kolding and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the men’s doubles, Amalie Magelund and Freja Ravn in the women’s doubles and finally Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra BøJE in the mixed doubles were the Danish winners during a convincing display that laid down a marker for the remainder of the event.

The closest Finland got in any game was the second in the mixed doubles encounter which they lost 21-16.

The second game in Group One saw runners-up in the tournament’s last edition Germany defeat Scotland 4-1.

Germany took victory in the opening tie, the mixed doubles, thanks to Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Herttrich before Scotland levelled the tie up when Joshua Apiliga won the men’s singles game after defeating an opponent ranked more than 700 places above him in the rankings in Max Weisskirchen.

All contests in the match were decided in straight games but it was Germany who pulled away from that point onwards, with Yvonne Li in the women’s singles, Lamsfuss and Marvin Siedel in the men’s doubles and Herttrich and Kilasu Ostermeyer in the women’s doubles the other winners in the tie.

The match of the day came in Group Two as France defeated the Netherlands 3-2 in a contest that had drama all the way to the end.

Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands won the opening men’s singles game of the tie in three games before France levelled when Qi Xuefei triumphed in the women’s singles game.

France continued their momentum into the doubles matches with Ronan Labar and Julien Maio victorious in the men’s doubles match to put them ahead in the tie.

The Netherlands bounced back in the women’s doubles game thanks to Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen who levelled the contest at 2-2.

This meant it all came down to the mixed doubles game, with France’s in-form pairing of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue triumphing 21-18 10-21 21-19 against Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek.

In the other Group Two tie, Russia recorded an emphatic 5-0 win over England.

Vladimir Malkov got the Russians off and running in the men’s singles game with a straight game win, an achievement matched in the women’s singles by Evgeniya Kosetskaya.

Russia’s dominance continued into the doubles with the tie sealed by a straight game win for Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov in the men’s match.

In game four, the women’s doubles, Russia were taken to three games before Anastasiia Akchurina and Olga Morozova prevailed, with the whitewash win sealed in the mixed doubles contest by Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova.

Tomorrow's scheduled matches see England up against the Netherlands and France facing Russia in Group Two, before Denmark take on Germany and Scotland face Finland in Group One.
