Italy and Slovenia were victorious in the team sprint finals at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Cross-Country World Cup in Swedish resort Ulricehamn.

It was a first World Cup win of the season for both Eva Urevc and Anamarija Lampič as they steered Slovenia to victory in the women’s competition.

Urevc and Lampič recorded a combined time of 19min 40.18 to secure gold ahead of Sweden I by 0.18.

The Swedish team made up of Maja Dahlqvist and Linn Svahn finished second in 19:40.36.

The bronze medal went to Laurien van der Graaff and Nadine Fähndrich of Switzerland I after clocking 19:40.43.

Sadie Maubet Bjornsen and Jessie Diggins of United States I finished agonisingly outside the podium positions on 19:40.49.

The men’s race was won by Francesco de Fabiani and Federico Pellegrino of Italy, whoi recorded a winning time of 18:29.00.

Jovian Hediger and Roman Furger of Switzerland I clinched silver in 18.30.10, while Karl-Johan Westberg and Johan Häggström of Sweden II secured third spot in 18:30.61.

The Swedish duo finished ahead of the Sweden I pair of Marcus Grate and Oskar Svensson, who came fifth in 18:31.04.

Luděk Šeller and Michal Novák of Czech Republic I were sandwiched between the two Swedish teams after finishing in 18:30.63.

Russia leads the overall Nations Cup standings on 6,978 points, ahead of Sweden on 4024 and Norway on 3754.

The next stage of the FIS Cross-Country World Cup is due to take place in Nové Město in the Czech Republic on February 20 and 21.
