Marín, Spain’s Rio 2016 champion, was beaten 14-21, 21-8, 21-19 by Chinese Taipei’s world number one Tai Tzu Ying, while former world champion Axelsen, unbeaten in 29 matches stretching back to last January, went down 16-21, 21-5, 17-21 to fellow Dane and second seed Anders Antonsen.

Asked about Axelsen on the eve of the final at Impact Arena, Antonsen said: "He’s obviously playing really good and he’s looking so strong now.

"If I’m to face Viktor I’ll have to dig really deep."

The digging was duly done and the second seed became the first person to get the better of the 2017 world champion and Rio 2016 bronze medallist since Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting.

While the Asian swing clean sweep eluded Axelsen and Marín, it was achieved by Chinese Taipei’s men’s doubles pairing Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin, who won their final against Indonesia’s defending champions Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan 21-17, 23-21.

That distinction was also achieved by home pairing Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who won their mixed doubles final against South Korea's Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung 21-18, 8-21, 21-8.

The all-South Korean women’s doubles final saw Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan come from behind to beat Kim So-yeong and Kong Hee-yong Yong 15-21, 26-24, 21-19.

The BWF World Tour Finals was the third of three tournaments taking place in a bubble in Bangkok.

Due to be played in Basel from March 2 to 7, the Swiss Open is the next event listed on the BWF World Tour calendar.
