Gu was one of five winners crowned on the first day of the 2021 Winter X Games, which is taking place without spectators in Colorado, and also picked up a big air bronze medal.

The 17-year-old skier had an average amplitude of 11ft 3in on her best superpipe run and beat two-time champion Cassie Sharpe of Canada, who took second place ahead of compatriot Rachael Karker.

Gu's triumph came after finishing third in the women's ski big air, behind Swiss winner Mathilde Gremaud and Megan Oldham of Canada.

American Jamie Anderson won the women's snowboard slopestyle, with 19-year-old New Zealander Zoi Sadowski-Synnott second and Laurie Blouin of Canada third.

Anderson is the back-to-back Olympic champion in the discipline and this is her seventh X Games title, while Blouin won the silver medal at Pyeongchang 2018.

Anderson also became the first-ever woman to compete in an X Games knuckle huck contest, although it was another American - 17-year-old Dusty Henricksen - who emerged victorious there.

The knuckle huck events sees athletes have 20 minutes to perform tricks off the "knuckle" - the lower section - of the big air jump.

Another 19-year-old from New Zealand, Nico Porteous, took the men's ski superpipe title.

Colorado's own Aaron Blunck and Birk Irving were second and third in that order.

Two more days of competition are scheduled in Aspen.
