Fifth seed Les Gillet is out of the World Indoor Bowls Championships after defeat to Perry Martin in round one of the open singles, but past winner Mark Dawes is through.

The second set proved decisive, as clinical scoring from Martin saw him through to an 8-9, 10-1, 2-1 win at Potters Leisure Resort in Great Yarmouth in England.

"I was so pleased to have another opportunity of playing in this event so I really wanted to get over the line against Les to keep my challenge going," Martin said after the win.

That was an all-English affair, and another English player, 12th seed Mark Royal, awaits.

Royal beat Wales' Damien Doubler 7-4, 6-5 in a match the victor labelled as "a hard grind".

Due to the coronavirus pandemic there are no overseas players at the tournament this year, and all four of today's winners were English.

Dawes, champion in 2018, squeezed past 21-year-old Scot Darren Weir 7-7, 9-7.

Mervyn King will play Dawes in round two following a 6-4, 9-5 win over compatriot Ellen Falkner.
